WE'RE MOVING!!

It's on!  We decided to take the plunge and get our own kitchen space!  No more renting incubator space... no more lugging ingredients and supplies back and forth!  It's time and we are oh sooo excited!

But...

we need your help!

As you can imagine getting retail space in the 5 boroughs of NYC is ridiculously expensive.  We have been saving our pennies and have enough money for the deposit, rent, build-out of the space (moving plumbing, getting the space to code with the health department, paint, tile, dry wall, and other boring stuff) but really need a little help from our friends, family, and clients to help with with the last little bit which will help us buy the equipment (ovens, induction burners, mixer, refrigerator, freezer, etc).

That's where kickstarter comes in!

We've launched #cakestarter on #kickstarter to raise the last $12,000 we need to make this commercial kitchen/cake studio a reality.  Please take a moment to view our campaign and support our project.  Plus you can get fabulous rewards in return for your donation like sweet Katherine Sprules Cake Designs swag (tote bags, aprons, & greeting cards) or join the cookie or mini cupcake of the month club or even get a wedding or occasion cake at a discount!  Every dollar helps truly helps makes this sweet dream come true!

Kim & Kanye who?

I have used a lot of willpower, not to read anything about Kim and Kanye's crazy Parisian wedding...

...that is until this morning.  I ran across this really cute blog from Loverly entitled,

"7 Reasons Kim & Kanye's Wedding Isn't as Cool as Yours"

It is definitely a light fluffy piece but it is cute and worth a read :) I especially liked the part about not having to worry about famous teenagers showing up to your wedding in a batman costume.  That really resonated with me because my husband threatened to show up to our own wedding in a chewbacca costume (we were married on October 30th).

While we are on the subject of Kimye, I couldn't help but love the New York Post after they printed this...

Why do I bring all of this up?  Perspective my friends.  Your wedding is a beautiful time and a celebration of love and commitment.  No matter what the size of your wedding, or the cost of your dress, or the size of your ring or cake, it is a special and time that requires attention, love & respect.

Perspective.

Okay this baker will get back to baking...

Happy Thursday Friends. xo

2 bicycles = LOVE

Every now and then you really connect to a couple.  HK and John were one of those couples.  I loved their story from the beginning...

It all started ten years ago.  HK was riding his orange bike through the park and got a flat tire.  Imagine, being stuck miles from home with a flat tire.  What a nightmare!  Luckily John, who was also riding a bike (his a beautiful black bike), saw a fellow biker in need of help, stopped and helped fix HK's flat tire... and they fell in love.

Now I'm a horrible story teller but doesn't that sound like the plot of the next big chick flick starring Rachel McAdams?  I know right?  Super romantic.

HK and John have been together for 10 years but with everything that's happened in the last year with marriage equality, the wanted to make it official and celebrate the legal and spiritual union with a fabulous party, and of course an amazing cake :)

How could I not want to make this deserving couple an amazing wedding cake?

HK emailed me the inspiration photos below:

HK and John wanted a clean modern design for their cake with some kind of cake topper that had to do with bicycles.  They actually ordered the plastic toppers above from etsy.  After giving it some thought I really couldn't get over the beauty of the story of how they met.  I just couldn't throw two plastic bikes on the top of the cake.  I decided to make the bikes myself from gum paste (kind of like a sugar clay).  I suggested adding succulents (yes, I LOVE succulents!) to add a masculine but elegant detail to the cake.

I finally convinced HK and John to let me made the toppers (I assured them, the toppers would be awesome and personal and add to the special day).

The cake was also delicious.  The couple chose a fresh lemon cake layered with coconut cake with a raspberry preserve and a delightful swiss meringue buttercream.  It was an amazing combination and I'm happy to have created such a tasty cake for such a loving couple.

The ceremony and reception was held at the Landmarc Restaurant at The Time Warner Center in Columbus Circle.  They have the most amazing views...

The cake in all it's glory...

HK and John are a very special couple & I felt truly honored to have made their wedding cake.

Cheers to a lovely couple.  xo

A cake inspired by one kick ass dress

It all started with a dress.

Jessica and Peer are New Yorkers, through and through.  They were in love and just wanted to be married. They are totally no fuss, no non-sense New Yorkers :)  They decided they wanted a small wedding in their West Village neighborhood.    In fact, when they got engaged Jessica didn't even go dress shopping.  One of her girlfriends emailed her a picture of a dress... and Jessica loved it and bought it without a second thought.

That little dress her friend emailed her?  A completely kick ass Alexander McQueen designer wedding dress.  Did I mention Jessica is like 6 feet tall and gorgeous (and super duper smart)?!

Yeah, she can pull off a designer dress :)

When Jessica and Peer first contacted me about their wedding cake, they only knew two things.

1) Their venue: which was a super cute, neighborhood restaurant called the little owl

2) Jessica's amazing designer wedding dress (pictured above)

They were super open to different ideas and we had a great time throwing around ideas.  Jessica and Peer wanted a classy, clean, garden party inspired cake.  Jessica forwarded me a few pictures of flowers (roses, lilies and orchids) and told me to run with the cake design.

and that is what I did...

After talking with the lovely couple I came up with the following four ideas.

I usually provide couples with 2-3 sketches.  After I created the three sketches for Jessica and Peer I couldn't help but do one more sketch inspired more by that kickass dress I told you all about earlier in this post... remember the Alexander McQueen one with awesome lace?  Yeah, that one.

I really wanted to incorporate the awesome lace work of Jessica's dress in the cake design.  I threw in the fourth sketch on a whim.  But you know what?  They loved the fourth sketch.  They said it won by a landslide.

Jessica in her beautiful (and kick ass dress).

I am so happy to report that Peer and Jessica had a lovely wedding and enjoyed their cake thoroughly.

*Thank you Jessica and Peer, for allowing me to make your cake.  I loved every minute of it :)  xo

A working vacation in Arizona

So I know I say this all of the time but I really need to get better about keeping this blog up to date.  Sometimes it is so hard to just sit down type when life is so busy.

Here goes nothing...

Right after I made the cake for the Austin Scarlett launch (literally the day after) I hopped on a plane for the lovely and hot state of Arizona!  It was a welcomed trip after an insanely busy week.  I left with the hopes of laying by the pool, getting some sun on my ridiculously pale body, hanging out with my family, going horseback riding, and you know… just enjoying vacation.

Me and Chance, Summer 2012.
But I also volunteered to make my cousin’s wedding cake.  I really wasn’t concerned about the cake.  I’ve made a million cakes, I pre-made all of the sugar flowers in New York and brought them on the plane with me, it was going to be a breeze...

famous last words, I know.

I arrived in AZ super late Monday night... and that's when I realized I kind of overbooked my "vacation".  I had volunteered to make cupcakes for my cousin's daughter's birthday, make a wedding cake to serve almost 200 people, and lastly I was throwing my twin sister a baby shower complete with elephant sugar cookies and Kahlua Cupcakes (a family favorite)!

First up was little Emma’s 4th birthday party.  The family (especially the kiddos) loved my cupcakes.  A good omen indeed.

All the kiddos with the birthday girl in the middle :)
Pretty pink cupcakes fit for a princess.
All of my cousin plus little Trevin.

Next up was the wedding cake.  No big deal.  Like a said before, I know what I’m doing when it comes to baking.  I got this.  Except, my mom doesn’t exactly have all of the baking supplies I’m used to.  She ended up borrowing a friend’s mixer for me to use (last time I baked at her house, my buttercream was a bit too much for her mixer and it ended up in smoke, literally).  After the first batch it was clear, I needed reinforcements… and a bigger mixer.  My brother in law, Chris has a huge sweet tooth and agreed to be my sous chef.  And after a trip to Costo to buy a bigger professional kitchenaid, we were back in business!

The cake was to feed 165 people.  4 tiers.  2 flavors.  After my parents saw all of the cake on the dining room table, they called my uncle to tell him the cake was going to be 4 feet tall.    I have to admit if you aren’t used to seeing a cake being assembled I’m sure it can seem really crazily huge… and fattening.  My dad helped with the shopping for cake ingredients.  When I told him I needed 15 pounds of butter I think he almost had a heart attack J

What else do you think cake is made of besides flour, sugar, eggs and butter?

My whole family was amazed at how long it takes to make a wedding cake, so naturally they documented every second…
The original sketch of Jeff &Tayah's cake

I felt like the paparazzi was following me around.  Which I kind of loved :)  One morning I opted to take advantage of the amazing weather and dusted my sugar succulents outside on the back porch.

That was also the extent of sunbathing I got to do.

Time to assemble the cake!

It ended up being about two and a half feet tall and weighed a ton.  Two of the tiers were fresh lemon cake with prickly pear preserves and vanilla swiss meringue buttercream and the other two tiers were chocolate bourbon cake with raspberry preserves and vanilla swiss meringue buttercream.  Two of my favorite flavor combos for sure!  I’m not sure exactly how much it weighed but my dad and husband were superstars and helped me deliver the cake Saturday.

Me and my Daddio

My cousin Jeff and his now wife Tayah, decided to get married at my Uncle Ron’s house in the middle of nowhere aka the far east side of Tucson.  They really have a lovely house but it is in the middle of nowhere (which was the appeal).  Jeff and Tayah really wanted to embrace the dessert and had a hoe-down of a wedding.  It was fabulous!

Some of us were VERY EXCITED about cake :)

Unfortunately, for my third event of the week I didn't get hardly any photos.  Thank goodness other people took pictures!  It is had to remember to take picture when you are the one throwing the party!  I want to give a shout out to my cousins, Amy and Cody for all of their help with the shower and to my momma--thanks for EVERYTHING!  I think Elyse had a wonderful shower and felt the love for baby Bennett :)

Vera and Harper liked my cupcakes I think :)

It was a busy week, but an awesome one.  Arizona, it has been real.  We survived three big events, lots of happy celebrations and tons of baked goods.

I will leave you now with a photo of me and my sister, Elyse.

Being a twin is the best.. so are vacations, even if you have to work the entire time :)
